Another viking coder... just mucking about with ideas :)

Tuesday 19 June 2007

A guy at my work printed out the cartoons I did of my workmates onto Mousemats the other day, so now everyone wants one!

This must have stirred up my creative juices enough to start on another cartoon, this time one of the girls who works downstairs. She's been asking for me to draw her for ages, so I guess its only fair I start with her :D

I wonder why my GIFs wont animate any more?

maybe there's a limitation on these things?

The viking walks!

Pixel Vikings!

This is a quick sketch of a concept for my mate Gaqzi the Swede. I think I'll use this as a base for a picture he wants, so he can put it on his customisable Credit/Debit Card (http://www.swedbank.se/sst/inf/out/infOutWww1/0,,146851,00.html).

I wanted it to be like a modern day viking of the programming world, hence the mouse in one hand and the sneakers. Not too sure on the background though, I just whacked something on there to give it some depth.

I thought I'd upload the set of icons I created for some stuff here at work over the last 12 months.

A little more Pixel Art to add to the collection!
Oh and I also made a Coffee Cup animated for fun :D

(gah! Its not animating... stupid thing...)
I tweaked the Pixel 'Me' a little, fixing jaggies and changing the eyes/mouth for the animation.

Friday 8 June 2007

I made a new logo, in a Pixel Art Style.

I've also made a Pixel version of the caricature of me (all except the shoes).
I had a little go at animating a breathing cycle... not sure I like it though.

An update for Caico the Zombie Pixel Art. I'll make him some hands tomorrow, and possibly try animating some breathing & walking.

Tuesday 5 June 2007

Whilst perusing some Games Jobs the other day, I noticed one for a Pixel Artist. Now, I've never done anything like that before so I decided to try my hand at it.

I read up a few tutorials (namely this - by Derek Yu) and dove right in. I started with one of my sketches, shrunk it down and start pushing the pixels around to get to a point I was happy with.

It was loads of fun and I'd like to do a body to accompany it.
I've also moved onto another piece of pixel art, the caricature of myself. I'll throw it up once Im happy with it.

I could definitely see myself doing this for a job! Because you still get to start out with regular concept sketches, then move onto making them pixelified. There's just the matter of learning how to animate things.
However, when I was going through some tutorials on pixel art & animation, I noticed one for making a sprite-based fighter and it got me thinking about a game idea.

A zombie-based side scrolling beat-em up! I guess having projectile weapons would be a must, but it could be somewhat survival-horror like if the ammo was rather limited.
An interesting spin would be maybe a time-limit style, whereby you've already been bitten, but you're determined to save someone (I guess "saving the girl" is the norm in these games) or possibly retrieve some antidote from a lab? That would alleviate the problem of being bitten in the game would essentially mean game over.

Playing Streets of Rage 2 on the Wii Virtual Console the other day obviously bought back so many fond memories it has inspired me! lol
